Spotlight 4 – Maio, 2021

Preparing Europe for the digital age is among the six key priorities of the European Commission (EC) established by President Ursula von der Leyen in 2019. The digital transition is key to the growth of the European Union (EU) in the next decade, to the green transition and to strengthen competitiveness vis-à-vis other regions, in particular Asia and the United States (USA).
To fulfil this objective, a share of the next Multiannual Financial Framework and the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism is being allocated to digital transition. In addition, in March, the European Commission developed Europe’s Digital Compass, with concrete objectives for digitization indicators that must be achieved by 2030. In this study, we first analyse the challenges and opportunities of the digital transition at European level. In the second part, we assess the situation in Portugal vis-à-vis the objectives of the European Commission and identify which are the areas that can and must be improved to achieve these goals.
